Give

We can all give time and/or money to causes we care about. Something I discovered too late, is that in some countries and situations, donations can be leveraged for greater impact through tax deductions or employer matching programs. So there's no real excuse not to give back.

Here's my attempt at being more intentional about it and sharing it publicly to hopefully inspire others to do the same. Take time to select charities best matching your values and a vision of the world you want to live in. One thing I learned is that, like political parties the perfect charity doesn't exist, so it's about making the best possible choice given the options available.

WWF

WWF is the world's leading conservation organization, acting to safeguard the most critical forests, river systems, wetlands, savannas, and ocean habitats.
What I like about WWF is its size and importance, allowing it to reach to and lobby large governmental bodies such as the EU and UN, and thus competing with other interests on a global scale. When oil, arms, big data and ultra-processed food industries spend billions lobbying every politician they can get their hands on, there's no reason environmental causes shouldn't do the same.
WWF is not foreign to controversies, among which greenwashing, data manipulation and allegedly hiding local populations mistreatments under the excuse of conservation.
I believe that here as well, the size is an advantage allowing for more public scrutinity, which smaller organizations would not necessarily benefit from, allowing for WWF to correct itself. Ultimately the organization was cleared of complicity in abuses by a report in 2020, and came up with a plan to further improve its actions in this area.
